You do not need a free afternoon to add enrichment to your dog’s routine. A short, well-matched activity can provide useful mental engagement without turning your schedule upside down.
1. Five treats, five hiding spots
Ask your dog to wait or have someone hold them while you hide five treats in easy locations. Release the dog to search.
2. Three-minute sniff scatter
Scatter part of a meal across a safe area and let your dog search naturally.
3. Rapid-fire hand targets
Move your hand between several easy positions and reward nose touches. Keep it fun rather than frantic.
4. Toy-choice game
Offer two familiar toys. Reward engagement with the one your dog selects.
5. Box investigation
Place three open boxes on the floor and add food to one. Rotate the location between repetitions.
6. Hallway recall
Two people stand apart and take turns calling and rewarding the dog. Keep flooring safe and prevent uncontrolled sprinting.
7. One new trick step
Instead of teaching an entire trick, reward one small piece of the behavior for a few minutes.
8. Food toy setup
Fill an appropriate toy with part of your dog’s meal and use the remaining time for calm engagement.
9. Mini scent trail
Make a short trail leading to a reward and let your dog follow it.
10. Settle-and-chew routine
Not every enrichment session needs to increase excitement. Pair a mat with an appropriate chew or food toy and reward relaxation.
Build a simple rotation
Choose one searching game, one training game, and one calming activity. Rotate those three during the week so you are not inventing something new every day.
